Powerpoint design to really give you the edge

So many people working in sales bemoan the tedious meetings they have had to put up with at the office. They lament the length of time they have had to sit through ideas repeated, regurgitated and served up unattractively on a screen. Powerpoint presentations are often mentioned in such complaints, as if an innocent piece of software might be acting alone on a mission to induce severe ennui. But this is not the case, or at least simply accusing powerpoint design does not get to the essential element of what people are complaining about. Only when Powerpoint is abused does it generate boredom. It is important to state, therefore, that good, exciting, even inspiring sales presentations can be created using Powerpoint – it is a tool for our hands and minds to do with what they will.

Evidently, it is not straight-away obvious how to embark upon changing a working lifetime’s accumulation of bad habits. Old habits die hard, as the saying goes. This is why there are companies out there with a direct aim to help ease the bad Powerpoint design users out of their old ways and into illuminating new ones. These will know how desperately people in business need their sales presentations and Powerpoint presentations to work to their full capabilities. And their results are quite striking to say the least – in some instances these companies might improve their clients’ sales success by up to 35%.

It wouldn’t be worth just automatically enlisting the aid of specialists though. Indeed, people working in sales will hardly need telling that they should take a while to consider how their particular company might benefit from assistance in optimising their sales presentations skills. No company is the same, and it is the very idea of uniqueness that can really be promoted via the medium of Powerpoint presentations in order to convince others round to a given company’s perspective. The notion of underscoring difference to achieve maximum success is surely evidenced in the clients of Powerpoint presentation service providers – those who have come top of the class in good powerpoint design practice are as diverse as Colgate-Palmolive and Santander.

Document processing is a good step to a paperless office

Document management software organises your files on your IT network. So far, so good. But the excellent thing about them is that they don’t just organise your electronic files – Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, Powerpoint files and so on. They also house your physical documents, or at least, an electronic copy of them. This e-version is made by document processing software, which turns a paper document into one that can be stored on a computer. That might be as straightforward as a pdf that represents a scan of the sheet or sheets of paper in question, but depending on the software you buy it can be considerably more sophisticated. Optical character recognition (OCR) allows documents – even handwritten documents in some cases – to be scanned and turned into computer files. That means that everything that hits your in-tray – whether through the postbox or email inbox – can be treated the same way. The same is true of invoices which, thanks to invoice processing, may be paid at the same time regardless of whether they were electronic or paper in nature.

All of this can have a big impact on the efficiency of your company. The advantages of a paperless office are obvious. Having documents on your computer system means that anyone can use them at any time, if that’s what you need, rather than running the risk of an important letter or invoice getting hidden under a pile of paper on someone’s desk. It saves money and is better for the environment in terms of the amount of paper you’re using – concerns that should interest most businesses thanks to rising energy and resources prices, and environmental guidelines.

Finally, invoice processing allows you to treat suppliers and customers the same. There can be a ‘digital divide’ between those who send invoices by email or electronically, and those who send them in by letter. Those who do the latter can find themselves forgotten while someone in the accounts department gets around to dealing with their invoice (perhaps making out a cheque as well…). That can be bad for business. All in all, then, document processing has many advantages and can make a significant difference to the way your company is run – including your relationships with clients and suppliers, which for many is where it really counts. A good document management system can bridge the gap between a paper-based and paper-less office, enabling your staff to do their jobs better and lifting your bottom line.

Phono stage -€“ better sound from your records

There are more and more components to sound systems constantly being developed, as speakers and hi-fis are becoming more up-to-date. But at the end of the day, some people still want to utilise the old-fashioned devices, such as tape decks or vinyl players. Reconciling these types of music players with the most up-to-date digital music equipment can be very complicated, as any vinyl junkie will tell you. Many people simply give up on playing the collections they may have spent decades building up, and instead buy new versions of all their music. However, there is a solution to this difficulty: a phono preamp (otherwise known as a phono amp or phono stage) can convert the output from a vinyl turntable into a sound you can play on the most modern speakers.

Vinyl is often thought of as the real ‘problem format’ for old music lovers. Most of the devices which are generally connected to a stereo system or speakers, though they can work less well than the most modern sound systems, will give a satisfying sound. But vinyl records work with a far smaller output, as they use magnetic cartridges. Vinyl records just can’t be played without an artificial amplification – and that’s where phono preamps enter the stage.

The phono amp is an additional amplification stage, usually built into older receivers and amps. But modern sound systems, such as mini-systems, home theatre units, and most stereo systems, do not have a place for phono input; they really don’t cater for vinyl lovers, instead choosing to play music through the newer systems. This means that you’ll have to turn to the existing inputs within your sound systems (the CD, Aux, Line In, etc) to connect your vinyl turntable, with the help of a phono stage to reconcile the two points. This amplification is known as RIAA re-equalisation, as it removes the effect originally made when cutting the LP, ‘equalisation.’ This effect was useful back then to get rid of feedback and background noise, but it interferes with vinyl being played with modern speakers now.

A phono amp can be found in most electrical shops, and when wired up between the turntable and the speaker or stereo system, should allow you to enjoy the vinyl records that you’ve collected over the years, with minimal hassle. So if you know anyone who’s concerned about the problems of playing vinyl records with decent modern speakers, let them know that all they need is a phono stage; the phono amp, when added to the amplification inside decent speakers, will let your vinyl play as clearly as ever.
